The founder of Kotobukiya (the current Suntory), Shinjiro Torii, began building Japan's first malt whiskey distillery on the outskirts of Kyoto in 1923. The Yamazaki district now known as the birthplace of Suntory whiskey, is an area also known since ancient times for its excellent water by the name of Minaseno.

Suntory introduced Suntory Shirofuda ("white label") in 1929, the first genuine whiskey to be produced domestically. After further refinements to suit the discriminating market of Japan, the premium whiskey Kakubin ("square bottle") was born.

Another distillery was built in 1973 in Hakushu at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake in Japan's Southern Alps. Suntory refined its techniques at these two ideal distillery sites to develop a variety of first-rate unblended whiskies and bring to market such products as the single malt whiskies Yamazaki and Hakushu, as well as Hibiki blended whiskey.

Suntory Spirits Limited was also recognized as World Whiskey Producer of the Year, an award bestowed upon one whiskey maker in the World Whiskey category for producing a wide variety of high-quality products.

Suntory handles over 70 brands of imported Western wines and spirits. These include such whiskey brands as Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Ballantine's, and Canadian Club. We also import the Macallan, Bowmore, Laphroaig, and Glenfiddich single malt whiskies, which are becoming increasingly popular today. Other highly regarded liqueurs and spirits of the world we handle include Lejay Crème de Cassis from France, Kahlua coffee liqueur from Mexico, Jagermeister from Germany, Beefeater from England, and Sauza tequila from Mexico. Through our importing activities we give our customers in Japan an opportunity to share in the enjoyment of a wide range of esteemed beverages from around the world.

Costco is a good place to look for Yamazaki 18. They occasionally have bottles and at reasonable prices. Many states outlaw membership requirements for alcohol purchases, which means you can shop at Costco for Yamazaki whiskey in those states.

Hibiki 21 might be the most famous Japanese whisky. Demand is so high that bottles are scarce and prices start around $1400 US. Would you mix it with Coke?#hibikiwhisky #japanesewhisky #bartenderlife #barhumor #japanesewhiskey

It is the third largest producer of distilled beverages worldwide, behind Diageo and Pernod Ricard. The company's principal products include bourbon whiskey, tequila, Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, Canadian whisky, vodka, cognac, rum, cordials, and ready-to-drink pre-mixed cocktails.

James Beam began selling barrels of whiskey in 1795. By 1935, his family's business was formally established as the James B. Beam Distilling Company. Ten years later, the Chicago spirits merchant Harry Blum bought the company, and in 1968 sold it to American Brands, Inc.

In 1987, the James B. Beam Distilling Company purchased National Distillers and renamed itself the Jim Beam Brands Company. It was known as Jim Beam Brands Worldwide, Inc. by the time Fortune Brands purchased it in 2005.[3] Fortune Brands also acquired 20 brands from Allied Domecq in 2005, worth $5 billion,[4] which turned Fortune Brands into one of the largest producers of whiskey in the international market.[5]

In December 2011, Beam Inc. agreed to buy the only independent Irish whiskey distiller that existed at the time, the Cooley Distillery, for $95 million.[8] On April 23, 2012, Beam announced it would acquire the Pinnacle vodka and Calico Jack rum brands for $600 million.[9]

In addition to brands produced directly by the company and its subsidiaries, Beam Suntory imports and markets some brands produced by others, such as the DeKuyper cordial and the coffee liqueur Kamora. Beam facilities also produce spirits for brands owned by other companies, such as Calvert Extra blended whiskey, now owned by Luxco.

The flavor built on this vein, giving me cause to think of cider blended into mulled wine, but with an earthy, woody and ashy tinge. As a sipping whiskey, Ao is a complex, but fully approachable wonder of the world. The finish shed much of this, running spicy before turning dry.

The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Right now, the whiskey world is experiencing a surge in demand for Japanese whiskeys. The Nikka, Suntory, and Hakushu distilleries are all offering their products in the U.S. market through partnerships with other companies.

Suntory's 30-year-old Hibiki whiskey took home the top award at the International Spirits Challenge in 2003. This unexpected triumph was Japanese whiskey's big coming-out party on the global spirits stage. Courtesy of Suntory hide caption

So why won't Japanese producers just send us more of their delightful spirit? For one, they aren't all that confident that Americans will drink their whiskey the "right" way. "Japanese whiskey distillers are very protective of their product," says Kim. "It's a made for Japanese palates, so it needs context."

After the ISC win, Suntory tried to reconnect with American tipplers. This time it exported its Yamazaki 12-year whiskey, a top-shelf single malt, which was received well at Japanese restaurants and elsewhere.

Tiffany Soto, beverage manager for Pabu in Baltimore, stocks 10 Japanese whiskies that took her over a year to source. She says she sees a growing interest in the spirits. "Japanese whiskey sales account for more than 35 percent of our total cocktail sales, with demand increasing each month," she says.

For consumers who simply cannot wait, it is possible to bring in Japanese bottles by buying them online, through mail order or in a suitcase. But the regulations and the legality of these options vary widely around the U.S. In the meantime, it will be a while before Japanese whiskey is as ubiquitous as ramen.

Focused on targeting the American market, Kikori Whiskey is a product of Japan that is made entirely from rice which is why it is sort of a single grain whisky. It is a smooth welcome to the whiskey category and is barrel-aged for a minimum of three years in American oak and Sherry casks. It has a distinctive style which makes it a delicious and delicate whiskey.

The joint venture with its Jim Beam unit took about two years longer than Suntory CEO 's Chief Executive Officer Takeshi Niinami had anticipated. The companies surmounted tensions about the right way to make whiskey, as well as hurdles in communications that come from mixing Eastern and Western cultures. Closely held Suntory mostly left the bourbon recipe alone, but changed how it purifies water and tweaked operating procedures to make it more efficient, he said.

The acquisition And it gave the company a much larger presence outside of Japan, where an aging population and a sluggish economy have hampered growth. Suntory now generates more than half its profit in international markets. The company has grappled with tariffs on American whiskey imposed by the European Union, a situation exacerbated by Brexit, which has driven down the price of the pound and made scotch cheaper, Niinami said.

Its main focus now is selling more spirits in the U.S., where Legent will be distributed. Bourbon consumption has surged across the globe in recent years, and jumped 6.4 percent in the U.S. last year. The growth in alcohol is mainly occurring at the high- end of the market, and rare, expensive Japanese whiskey has become increasingly popular.
