Dedh Ishqiya: A Review

Dedh Ishqiya is a sequel to the 2010 film Ishqiya, which was a critically acclaimed and commercially successful dark comedy about two con men who fall in love with a widow and her friend. The sequel follows the same duo of Khallu (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) as they get involved in another twisted plot involving a begum (Madhuri Dixit) and her confidante (Huma Qureshi).

The film is set in a fictional town of Mehmudabad, where the begum organizes a poetry competition to choose her next husband. Khallu, who is a master of Urdu poetry, decides to participate in the contest and impress the begum with his verses. Babban, on the other hand, falls for the begum's assistant Muniya, who has a secret agenda of her own. The film also features Vijay Raaz as Jaan Mohammad, a local gangster who is obsessed with the begum and wants to marry her by any means.

The film is a delight for lovers of language, literature and culture, as it showcases the rich heritage of Urdu poetry and the nawabi lifestyle of the past. The dialogues are witty, poetic and full of double entendres. The film also pays homage to some of the legendary poets of Urdu literature, such as Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Bashir Badr.

The film is also a visual treat, as it captures the beauty and elegance of the old-world charm of Mehmudabad. The costumes, sets, props and locations are all authentic and exquisite. The cinematography by Setu is stunning and creates a contrast between the colorful and vibrant scenes of the poetry contest and the dark and gritty scenes of the gangster's den.

The film is also a musical treat, as it features some of the best songs composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and sung by Rekha Bhardwaj, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Birju Maharaj and Sukhwinder Singh. The songs are not only melodious but also relevant to the mood and theme of the film. The song "Hamari Atariya" is a classic mujra number performed by Madhuri Dixit with grace and elegance. The song "Dil Ka Mizaaj Ishqiya" is a romantic duet between Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri Dixit that expresses their hidden feelings for each other. The song "Zabaan Jale Hai" is a melancholic solo by Naseeruddin Shah that reflects his loneliness and longing for love.

The film is also a brilliant showcase of the acting talents of its lead cast. Naseeruddin Shah is superb as Khallu, who is a romantic at heart but also a cunning manipulator. He delivers his lines with flair and finesse and makes us laugh and cry with his expressions. Arshad Warsi is hilarious as Babban, who is a loyal sidekick but also a lustful lover. He brings out the comic relief in the film with his timing and mannerisms. Madhuri Dixit is gorgeous as the begum, who is a mysterious and graceful woman with a hidden past. She proves that she still has the charm and charisma to light up the screen with her smile and dance moves. Huma Qureshi is impressive as Muniya, who is a smart and strong woman with a secret plan. She matches up to the veterans with her confidence and performance.

The film is not without its flaws, though. The film is slow-paced at times and could have been edited more tightly. The film also suffers from some plot holes and inconsistencies that may confuse or annoy some viewers. The film also lacks the originality and freshness of its predecessor, as it follows a similar formula and structure.

Overall, Dedh Ishqiya is a smart, funny, rich and gorgeous film that entertains and engages its audience with its story, characters, dialogues, music and visuals. It is a rare sequel that lives up to its expectations and delivers more than what it promises.
